It was no secret what Thuy Pham and Miho Aoki had in mind when they presented United Bamboo's spring '09 collection Confettisystem's spangled banners draped on the runway entrance looked a bit like glittering seaweed, and the soundtrack to the show began with crashing waves and ended with James Iha's custom soundtrack of ukelele-tinged pop music. If you haven't guessed it already, the show was all about summer and the beach. Fresh-faced models with wispy side-buns strutted the catwalk in delicate pieces that seemed almost transparent. Paperbag-waist shorts and origami-pleated tops complemented slouchy anoraks and swing coats in soothing shades of beige and white. Starting off quietly, the show ended with a bang as hot-pink pieces popped in against subtler hues, along with seafoam green and kelp-print frocks. And what better way to top off the looks than with Deka Ray's delicate yet sharply geometrical necklaces and hairclips? A better study in contrasts won't be found anywhere else this Fashion Week.
