Calling all First Lady fans: Michelle Obama's new book goes on sale today, and in it, she discusses the inspiration behind her anti-obesity campaign — the White House kitchen garden. Mrs. O successfully turned the South Lawn of the White House into a bountiful and beautiful source of nutritious grub, and along the way, she's inspired loads of green-thumbed novices to experiment with a few herbs, or maybe a potted tomato or two.
As budding gardeners, we're taking comfort in the fact that even the President's garden yields some tasteless cantaloupes every now and then. The Times has a full review of American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, and we hear that there are plenty of gorgeous photos inside (and a few ridiculously cute snaps of Bo, the family dog, too).
